Freedom 250 in Brussels: ARTEVENTIA celebrates 250 years of the United States

On June 28, 2026, ARTEVENTIA took part in Freedom 250, the major celebration held in Brussels to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.

Within the monumental setting of Parc du Cinquantenaire, the house designed a visual sequence in the American colours, featuring a release of blue, white and red smoke, before delivering the closing pyrotechnic show. An intervention conceived to bring a symbolic and spectacular dimension to an institutional event of international scope.

Freedom 250: when the spectacle becomes a symbol

On June 28, 2026, Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels hosted Freedom 250, a major celebration organised for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. In this history-steeped setting, ARTEVENTIA intervened at two key moments of the evening: first with a smoke release in the colours of the American flag, and then with the closing pyrotechnic show.

At first glance, the two sequences may seem very different. One works with colour and movement over time, the other with the moment, energy and verticality. Yet, they both answer to the same intention: giving visual form to a collective symbol.

“On this type of event, the first question is not which effect will be the most spectacular. You have to understand what is being celebrated, what the public must immediately recognise and how to translate that idea into the space,” explains Édouard Grégoire, Artistic Director of ARTEVENTIA.

The choice of blue, white and red smoke is a direct part of this logic. Its interpretation is immediate, almost universal. The colours appear in the sky as an extension of the American flag, while dialoguing with the monumental lines of the Cinquantenaire and the spectacular openness of its architecture.

Here, the effect does not seek to tell a complex story. On the contrary, it must be understood in a fraction of a second.

This is precisely what makes this type of creation more demanding than it appears. A symbolic image must be simple, legible, perfectly synchronised and strong enough to exist within a monumental environment without overwhelming the site. Colour, duration, wind direction, height and density all become staging parameters.

“The simplest effects are sometimes the most difficult to achieve, because they cannot hide behind complexity. When working with three colours and an immediately identifiable idea, everything relies on precision.”

Parc du Cinquantenaire plays an essential role here. As with other major Brussels productions, the architecture is not a mere backdrop. It imposes a scale, structures the gaze and contributes directly to the perception of the show.

The creation must therefore be designed in relation to the arches, the park’s perspectives, the distances and the position of the audience. This site-specific work is particularly important during an institutional event, where the final image must be both powerful for the spectators present and sufficiently legible for photographs, recordings and the media.

ARTEVENTIA’s second intervention takes place at the end of the evening, with a pyrotechnic show designed to prolong the energy of the celebration and close the event on a spectacular image.

Here again, the finale cannot be thought of as a simple addition. After an evening driven by commemoration and symbols, it must ensure the transition between the institutional dimension of the event and the collective emotion of the public.

“A successful finale is not necessarily the one that makes the most noise or uses the most effects. It is the one that gives the feeling that the event is finding its natural conclusion.”

This search for coherence is at the heart of ARTEVENTIA’s work on major public and international celebrations. Each project has its own codes, its own history and its own level of representation. The role of the creation is then to find a form capable of respecting these elements while producing a powerful experience.

Freedom 250 perfectly illustrates this approach.

A palette of three colours.

An emblematic monument.

An international celebration.

And two very different interventions that nonetheless serve the same narrative.

In this context, the show does not seek solely to impress.

It becomes a symbolic language.
